USS Midway Museum

Imagine experiencing life at sea aboard one of America's longest-serving aircraft carriers. Visitors to the USS Midway Museum enter a floating city at sea and walk in the footsteps of 225,000 Midway sailors who served our country and upheld the American ideals of strength, freedom and peace. The USS Midway Museum is an unforgettable adventure for the entire family. Guests can spend the day exploring more than 60 exhibits with a collection of 29 restored aircraft. The self-guided audio tour, narrated by Midway sailors, brings the carrier's history to life. Those who dare can "take to the sky" aboard one of two flight simulators.

Interesting fact: if "stood up", the Midway is taller than any high rise in San Diego

  • The Star of India: the world’s oldest active sailing ship
  • HMS Surprise: built in 1970 as a replica of the 18th century Royal Navy frigate Rose, and featured in the academy award winning film, Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World.
  • Californian, built in 1984 at Spanish Landing, launched for the 1984 Summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles, and in 2003, was designated as the official Tall Ship of the State of California
  • B-39: a Soviet submarine (it is hard to imagine living in such tight quarters!)
  • The USS Dolphin: the deepest diving submarine in the world
  • The Steam Ferry Berkeley: 1898 steam ferry that operated in San Francisco for 60 years
  • You'll also see a Pilot Boat, a Swift Boat, PLUS another dozen or so vessels to explore - each with interesting stories of their own.
